As a firm that began with three founding partners and has grown over the years to twenty-eight attorneys, we are committed to hiring associates who have a deep commitment to the practice of Indian law and who have the potential to become partners in the firm. Therefore, we seek candidates with interest or experience in Indian law and who have excellent academic credentials and strong writing and oral advocacy skills. Thus, many of our lawyers have served as judicial law clerks, members of the law review or come from other distinguished academic or professional backgrounds.
Many of the firm's attorneys began their careers at the firm after participation in our summer program. The Washington, D.C. office typically hires two or three summer associates, and the Alaska, Albuquerque, and San Diego offices one or two each. We strive to give summer associates varied assignments and to provide an accurate idea of the firm's practice and atmosphere. Whenever possible, we include summer associates in client meetings, depositions, court appearances, and legislative endeavors. Over the past few summers, summer associates have had the opportunity to play an important role on several of the firm's litigation teams on cases ranging from trust land acquisition to tribal authority to the assessment of utility taxes; to engage with members of Congress and staff on issues impacting tribes in Congress; and to work with our tribal clients in the development of tribal codes and ordinances.
Because of the smaller size of our firm, associates receive a substantial amount of responsibility early in their careers. These experiences include preparing pleadings and briefs in litigation, appearing in court, drafting updates to clients about important issues before federal agencies and congressional committees, attending meetings with clients, and participating in negotiations and settlement conferences. By working directly with senior partners, our lawyers receive hands-on legal training and help the firm fulfill its commitment to providing excellent legal services to the firm's clients.
